Living in Luxembourg

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is located in the heart of Europe and is one of the founding members of the European Union. Its capital, Luxembourg City, was founded in 963. Today the city has become a prosperous financial metropolis with a strong economy and an international, multilingual workforce.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a constitutional parliamentary monarchy (Grand Duchy). The Prime Minister is the head of government. The Grand Duke, who is the head of state, has only formal rights. The government exercises executive power. General elections are held every 5 years in which 60 members are elected to the Chamber of Deputies, a unicameral legislative body.

The country is divided into 4 electoral regions, 12 administrative cantons and 105 municipalities. Twelve of the municipalities have city status, the largest being Luxembourg City. Luxembourg City, together with Brussels and Strasbourg, is one of the three official seats of the European institutions. Luxembourg has three official languages: French, German and Luxembourgish. The first two are official languages of the European Union.
